Dear St. Andrews Anglican College Parents, Students, Teachers, Staff and Friends, Becker Helicopters staff & friends

My name is Chase Becker and I am in grade 11 this year. In my ninth grade I was diagnosed with a dysgerminoma (AKA Ovarian Cancer). I have lived through it and there isn't much I can say nor remember of the event in my life and if I am asked by others who did not know me at the time I said that I missed a year of school because of a mysterious cold that I picked up at Hogwarts (for those who do not know...Harry Potter is my favourite book :D ).

Anyways, my surgeon, the man who saved my life (not to be dramatic) has begun a fund raiser and I, unfortunately, haven't had the best records with the fund raisers. I have done the fun run and pink day etc for many years before I got sick but for most of them I have lost the stomach for it.

So now to pay up for my absences I have decided to go all out and scrounge as much money and friendship from all around. The fund raising that has happened FOR me has been incredible one time being a team from my parents work ( Becker Helicopters) and their wives and children raised over $10,000 MORE than the next best team. A feat I have not and will not forget.

I ask my peers, teachers, friends, Mrs. Kath my faithful superwoman, Masters of the force, The incredible leaders of this and many other generations to help me raise the most money on this day AND if you can COME and join me in the best volleyball fund raiser tournament of the century.

You can even make your own teams (I know the combination of the Mighty Mr. Elley and the Cheetah Ms. Court could win if they so chose to create a team!!). To all the Becker Helicopters crew that mummy and daddy are so proud of.

All you have to do to give money to the amazing people that will save lives with the small round pieces of metal in your pockets, jars and piggy banks (Don't worry kids the piggy doesn't have to be sacrificed, just show this email to your parents and they take it out of the Uber Super Duper Piggy Bank for you) and either bring it to us on the day or you can use credit cards. You can do it online.

I do know that is a big ask, YES IT IS!!, but that’s only because it’s the holidays you are all probably away and unable to glimpse this email but for those who do and will and have... think like the Famous Mr. Robson and "get off your backside and take initiative because you'll be fantastic, absolutely fantastic" :D .

Mike,

Thank you very much for the opportunity to gain my NVG rating with Becker Helicopters. Your facility is one of the most impressive training organisations I have had the privilege of being involved with in nearly 26 years of flying in Australia. My whole experience from the time I walked in the door and was met by Neils, to the time I finished my examination with Kim was truly enjoyable.

The knowledge and expertise imparted by Scott and Fergus during my training was more than I hoped for, and allowed me to feel quite confident going into my test that I would be able to pass as a result.

andrew passes his cplh flight test

Dark clouds and torrential rain could not stop Andrew from achieving one of his most important flights of his training ... it would be his CPLH flight test with Captain Mike Becker.

After two hours of flying, Andrew successfully pass his test! Relieved, he is happy to say he thought the test went better than expected.

Avoiding the customary hose dousing ceremony (walking far away from the hanger and keeping an eye on suspicious students with hoses), he was drenched with a cool cold bottle of water from behind. No harm done, and besides, it was 32 degrees!

Congratulations Andrew! Great work!

east timor delegation

In November 2010 Becker Helicopters and the Secretariat for Natural Resources Government of Timor-Leste (SERN) established an affiliation. As part of the Timor-Leste Government's human resources plans, Becker Helicopters was chosen to train a select group of Timorese nationals, ensuring they graduate with a Commercial Helicopter Pilots Licence.

Twelve months on our group of four male cadets have all completed General English, Aviation English, various Theory subjects and CASA exams as well as Flight Training (currently they are on Navigation flights). The girls are studying General English after arriving eight months after the guys.

On 19 November 2011 Becker Helicopters was proud to host the Secretary of State for Natural Resources Timor-Leste, H.E. Alfredo Pires. Mr Pires is in charge of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, before this he was the Natural Resource Advisor to the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste. His priority is to develop Timorese human resources and engage the Timorese people in the petroleum industry.

Traveling with a Timorese film crew, Mr Pires and his SERN delegates were given a VIP tour of the school by Captain Mike Becker. The visit concluded two days of filming with the aim to inform the Timorese public about SERN's scholarship programs and to showcase the Timorese students in their study environment. This film will run on Timorese state television.

The day included Mr Pires' flying with Mike Becker in the Squirrel following Emiliana and Cristiana, with Flight Instructor James Orrom, to the helicopter training area.

At the end of the day a Signing Ceremony cemented the relationship between SERN and Becker Heilcopters.

A great day was had by all!

Why did you want to fly helicopters? It was always my dream and as I hadn't enough funds when I was younger. I applied with the German Military Forces to do it with them but then there was a bad accident (with 70 fatalities) during a military airshow near my place in 1988, for which reason I decided to to refuse the obligatory military service and became a nurse instead. But later on, when I got better situated and had collected a bit of money I reactivated my old dream and did it.

Biggest challenge and why? Definitely hovering (it felt like balancing on the top of any egg and I thought I could never make it) and to be honest 180's (shame on me).

Most memorable training flight? Landing on Mt Ninderry. Flight Test with Mike Becker and Night flying.

What are your thoughts about theory? Theory is an essential part. It tells why wind is your friend and why wires can kill you, RRPM is your life and drift is always measured from heading to track made good.

What are your thoughts about the Instructors? They are all passionate pilots and this is what they transfer.

What would you do differently in training now that you finished? Nothing

What are you planning to do with your licence? To get back into Australia. It's pretty hard. So wherever it takes us to fly helicopters that will be our home.

Words of advice to those learning to fly? Keep on practicing and don't give up!

Why helicopters? Why aeroplanes!

Biggest challenge in training and why? Confined Areas as there are so many facets of the training which lead up to this part of the syllabus, it makes it such a challenging yet huge rewarding part!

Most memorable training flight? The first flight of my CPL training with Mez (Simon Meredith). I had not flown 8 years previously and had completed my theory through Beckers distance learning course. We tracked northbound coastal and I will never forget thinking this is what it's all about, determination hard-work and the satisfaction of it are all the more reason to make it happen.

What did you do after you finished training? I went back to my old job for one last cash-in! Then 3 months later I became a full time pilot working for The Edge Helicopters (now known as 12 Apostles Helicopters). During which I flew alongside other "Becker boys " Matt Wilson and Tim Watkins. The bonds made with pilots during the early days are solid and will continue for ever. Great times indeed!

What are you doing now? I completed my Instructor Rating a couple of years ago I have been busy full time instructing, conducting aerial photography, scenic flying and other miscellaneous charter flying ever since. I get a lot of satisfaction seeing other pilots learn how to fly helicopters and instructing is a constant challenge and I'm learning something everyday. I'd like to remain in the training environment for many years to come!

Advice to those learning to fly? Don't give up. If it were easy everyone would do it!

Advice to those looking for work? You need to see yourself as an "apprentice". Don't have huge visions of conquering the earth in the first few years. Give yourself realistic goals and believe in yourself and your abilities as people will be relying on you to keep them safe!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Instructing!

Why helicopters?
An amazing machine. Fascinated for years with the versatility of helicopters and career paths that one could take.

Biggest challenge in training and why?
Theory was tough for me, getting into a routine to study and make sense of all the jargon! A HUGE thanks to James (Theory Instructor) for all the hard work!

Most memorable training flight?
My first solo was amazing. I think I only made it back on pure adrenalin! Also the day after my flight test. I took my sister and her family around Noosa. That was still my favourite flight!

What did you do after training?
I ha to go home to work on the farm, as I knew I was leaving the farm for a few years. Then a few months later I started to look for work. After the second phone call I made I was in the car for an interview.

What are you doing now?
I am currently flying for 12 Apostles Helicopters in Victoria doing scenic flights with a bit of photography and filming. I'm leaving next work to start on Hamilton Island!

Advice to those learning to fly?
Start with a TIF (Trial Instructional Flight) to see you if you want to pursue it. Get your medicals and theory out of the way before you start flying full time and spending money, that way you can concentrate on the good stuff!

Advice to those looking for work?
Research!!! A resume will only get you so far if you don't have the minimum requirements. Also think about who you are going to see if you're looking for work at a tourism operator. Have a shave, dress tidy. I see it every week some guys are great but first impressions last.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In Canada heli-skiing in the winter and fires in the summer! Living the dream!!!

Final words?
It's a huge commitment not only financially but also friends and family. You need to to want to dream 100% or it just won't work. Think about where you want to end up, talk to many operators and pilots as you can. Keep networking as you never know who will be your boss one day!

Where and when did you start your apprenticeship?
I knocked on the door of Becker Helicopters when I was 16, a year 10 high school student with no qualifications or experience. I was looking for volunteer work. After 2 years of sweeping floors, washing machines and paint stripping parts I took on a school based traineeship, working one day a week and working during school holidays. At the end of 2 years I received a Certificate II in Aero Skills. It's amazing what knocking on the door can do.

Why engineering and why helicopters?
It was my Dad's idea. He knew I wanted to be a helicopter pilot. I was fascinated what helicopters could do, plus I loved the idea of flying an aircraft even though I was somewhat afraid of heights. I had very little mechanical experience. I was mechanically minded and enjoyed taking things apart, just because I would try to fix it but I'd have no idea how. Dad got a brochure from a local aviation engineering school which I was a bit hesitant about, but I figured I had to start somewhere.

Any challenges during your apprenticeship?
Biggest challenge was commuting to Brisbane, working full day then to come home and study for exams, which was the last thing I wanted to do!

Special or funny moments during training?
There's way too many funny moments to say. There's always something new everyday! One special moment? Leaving Grade 12 from my school in a helicopter. Thanks Beckers!

Advice to others seeking an apprenticeship?
If you have a goal, shoot for it. Don't let anything hold you back and go the extra mile. Sell yourself and get yourself known. It's a small industry and a name goes a long way.

brad noble passes his cplh

Congratulations and well done to Brad Noble who passed his CPLH flight test today.

Brad's journey from Brisbane to Beckers began in January 2011. First week, no fly! Bad weather! Not one to sit around Brad volunteered as crew during the Queensland flood relief. It would be awhile before Brad could fly.

After a couple of months of successfully passing his theory exams Brad was back on the flight roster. Not long after he would help as crew on a Sling job at Pelican Waters with Fergus Ponder .

Knocking out more hours Brad offered more of his personal time, less than a week before his flight test to help Chalky and students at the King of Mountain Race, last weekend.

Today was a success and we wish lots and lots of it when he leaves. Great work Brad!

Sunday was a brilliant day to enjoy the carnivale festivities at Pomona and soak up one of the most popular event on the Sunshine Coast calendar, the King of Mountain Race. If you left your joggers at home that was okay, you could still enjoy the thrill of Mount Cooroora from the skies. Close to 90 joyriders basked in the gorgeous scenery with David White (aka Chalky) in the pilot seat. Many thanks to Kylie Shaw, Matt Finegan, Brad Noble, Cameron Barnes, Jimmy Orrom and Geoff Shaw for their help. Well done guys!

Winner Neil Labinsky crosses the line in a very impressive time. He is currently 6 times champion.

When did you train at Beckers? End of 2009 - Start 2010

Why helicopters? I flew small fixed wing aircraft when I was younger with my father, being a private pilot, and growing up around remote control toys. The helicopter always fascinated me, and was something I wanted to do.

What did you do before you started training? Many things, diploma in hospitality, apprentice carpenter, qualified health and safety officer and most recent I was concreting to pay the bills! I never really knew what I wanted to do when I left school, at the time I knew helicopters was just not an option! $$$$

Memorable moments in flight training and why? The best part of my training was sling in the R44. It's definitely helped me in the decision process of the direction I will head in choppers.

Also my CPLH flight test with Mike Becker. I landed in Gympie, just before leaving for the last leg home. Did all my checks and proceeded to depart. On route to YBSU I was calculating my fuel, and to my horror I worked out I would be landing with practically the low fuel light on! Crapping my pants I carefully stated to Mike that I thought I would have not enough fuel to get back. Mike turned to me and said "well, what you are going to do about it?" I replied "I'm going to land and check my tanks?" Mike replied "are you?" So I picked a spot in a farmer's back yard, I did a quick recce (reconnaissance) and put her down. Mike jumped out and dipped the tanks for me. We had plenty of fuel to make it home. I passed my flight test that day. As PIC (Pilot In Command) I believe my decision to land is what made me pass. It's amazing how nerves rattle your brain!

Biggest challenge and why? Sling! You no longer have a horizon as a visual reference! When Mike said it's learning to fly all over again I didn't really believe it could be that hard. My god it was frustrating. But just like hovering, something clicks and it becomes automatic.

How did you feel when you passed your flight test? Relieved! I'd spent a lot of money at that point. There is really a lot of pressure on a student pilot to perform. Very glad I could now concentrate on my efforts on finding a job. Getting paid to fly and not paying to fly!

What did you do after you left Beckers? I moved back to the Gold Coast and started dropping in at some places where there were helicopters. I went back to work for a little while so I could pay the rent, and planned to work at a chopper company on weekends.

With no luck, and getting frustrated I moved back to Victoria and set up an interview at a couple of places. No luck. I went back to work as a concreter to save some money for a trip I was planning to drive up and across Australia in search of work.

The same thing I was hearing from everyone is "it's all about timing".

I was making my way down to Phillip Island with my father for a unique car day ... my Dad suggested I drop into Phillip Island Helicopters. I wasn't dressed for the occasion but I did it anyway. I walked in and chatted with the Chief Pilot. Feeling under dressed I set up a formal meeting at a later date. A week later I was doing a 2 week trial for them. I then worked on weekends for free for about 3 months whilst still concreting until the day Phillip Island Helicopters rang me and informed they needed me to go up to Lake Eyre to fly their R44.

What are you doing now? Currently in Maree, SA. Flying scenic over Lake Eyre. Building around 25 hours a month and "living the dream" as Jimmy (James Orrom - former Theory Instructor and now Flight Instructor at Becker Helicopters) would say every day!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself fighting fires, sucking water out of a local dam or swimming pool to douse a blaze. Or overseas somewhere in the snow fields or in a forest lifting logs! Only time will tell.

Advice or tips to those interested in learning to fly? Just enjoy the training while you can. You can do so much flying when you're training, when you're in the field it can be so inconsistent.

It's not feasible to be paying for flying when you're looking for work because you miss flying so much. Everyone's journey is different and it can take a while to see some time in the air in your first paying job.

Advice to those looking for work? Don't send emails, don't send resumes! If you're not the attachment don't bother. Face value is everything. Look smart, clean and be confident. If you feel you're really struggling don't beat yourself up, just keep at it.

As much as I hate to say it, it's all about timing! Put yourself out there, for free if you have to, it seems wrong but if you want the job suck it up. It's the norm in this industry for junior pilots.

The biggest advice, don't move around too much. Find a company and stick at it. Whether you call them twice a week, bug them on weekends in person or even every day. Just show you're keen. Sure they'll tell you first off they don't need you, and they probably don't, but show that when they do need you, you will be there, ready and rearing to go!

Final words? Welcome to aviation! Happy flying and remember ... if it don't hover, don't bother!

When did you train at Beckers? Commenced late August 2010 to June 2011

Why did you want to fly helicopters? The family took an hour scenic flight over Kakadu and Arnhem Land in 1999. I remember thinking how cool would it be to have that job.

Biggest challenge in training and why? It's all a bloody challenge, much harder than it looks. Relaxing was probably the biggest challenge, hence hovering took awhile.

Most memorable flight? Has to be the first solo. I'll never forget that first take off. My last solo navigation flight around Fraser Island was pretty awesome too.

What are your thoughts about the instructors at the school? Excellent bunch of guys, consider a couple of them as mates now.

What would you do differently in training now you've finished? Try to structure those initial hours so they are intensive and less disjointed. December/January weather didn't help that though.

What are you planning to do with your licence? Get that first elusive job - tourism, mustering. Don't mind. The ultimate goal is Search and Rescue (SAR). One day maybe.

Words of advice to those learning to fly? RELAX.

It was a momentous day back on 20 April 2011 when 16 year old student Morgan Vidler became Australia's unofficial youngest pilot to fly solo in a chopper.

Morgan began training at Becker Helicopters at the tender age of 14, logging his first training flight of 1.0 hour back in April 2010. Since then Morgan spends almost every school holidays and work experience time studying his theory and flying at the school. He has flown over 22 hours now. Great work Morgan.

At 4am this morning Captain Mike Becker and Captain James Orrom flew out to rescue 3 workers and 1 dog stranded on the rooftop of this Lowood property (located west of Brisbane). They were stranded for 2 days.

On return from this flight Mike and James rescued another 14 people from the rooftop of this school.

We welcome you to the first news of 2011!

Our pilots Fergus Ponder, Dom Brachet, Niels Bunte, James Orrom and Matt Wilson come to the aid of flood stricken town of Thangool (south west of Gladstone and north west of Bundeberg).

Fergus Ponder (experience flood relief pilot) assisted in the helicopter operations that devastated New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005.

Fergus and the crew have been flying since Boxing Day.

Co-ordinating ground operations has been Captain Mike Becker. Many thanks to the hard working engineers that worked over the Christmas Holiday period to keep our helicopters in the air.

MIKE and Jan Becker of Becker Helicopters are flying high after winning the award for innovation at the 21st annual Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards.

The awards, which were held in Brisbane on 21 Ocotber 2010, recognise the contribution that exporters make to the state’s economy.

Becker Helicopters won the Dermot McManus Award as well as being finalists in the Regional Exporter Category.

Mr Becker said he was honoured to have won.

“I’m a bit shocked actually. We didn’t go there expecting to win at all,” he said. “It’s an honour to receive the award and it’s recognition that we are doing something right.

“Obviously we’ve stepped out of the box within our industry.”

Among Becker Helicopters’ innovations is the introduction of a military-style syllabus within a civilian environment.

“The military can come to us and we’ll train pilots up and send them back into the military of their country of origin,” Mr Becker said.

Becker Helicopters trains a mix of overseas and civil (Australian) pilots.

“Military-wise we train about 40 to 50 pilots a year, from basic training to instrument training and night goggle training,” Mr Becker said.

“For our civil pilots we teach the basic CASA licence and have approximately 60 pilots a year.”

Mr Becker said the highlight for the business in 2010 was its achievements with night vision goggles.

“We’ve only been doing it for a year now. It took three years to get off the ground. It’s a bit of a political hot potato,” he said.

Mr Becker’s goal for 2011 is to keep building on the business’s achievements.

“Keep building on what we’ve done,” he said.

“Develop our export model more and expand our military and paramilitary course.

“We have an awesome team. Our team is our key to success.”

The Queensland Exporter of the Year Award went to Swift Australia, Australia’s largest meat packer and exporter.

Basically went straight to work. Had only passed my CPLH flight test and I was offered a job at The Edge Helicopters in Victoria where I immediately travelled to and done a 10 day trial with. Then returned to the Sunshine Coast to be offered another job with HAWCS doing power line surveys as a photographer and many other things. During this time I managed to build some hours up and cross hired their R44, doing joyflights for friends and family between QLD and NSW. After approximately 4 months at HAWCS I was offered a full time job back at the The Edge Helicopters in Victoria. Spent 3 months on the ground before making it on the flight line. Then very quickly built my hours up to 500+.

Putting out fires some where in the world. Utility work, instructing, chartering, tourism, generally living the dream!!!

Advice to those wanting to learn to fly?
Research the industry, speak to as many pilots as you can, so you are well prepared and informed on the journey that lies ahead. Most of all, train at Becker Helicopters. It's CERTAINLY the best decision I made in making my dreams a reality.

Advice on looking for work?
Be ready to go in an instant should a job prospect arise. The quicker you land on your potential employers doorstep, in person, the greater your chances of scoring that job. Make yourself useful from day one. Do whatever it takes to show that you are going to be an asset. Not a liability!!! And yes this will mean doing everything BUT flying a helicopter in the early days. For example, some of the things I did in my first year out of backhoe operator, photographer, cleaner, ticket seller, carpenter, gardener, truck driver, computer operator, mechanic, helicopter cleaner, helicopter cleaner, helicopter cleaner. Oh did I mention helicopter cleaner?

Final words?
My only regret I have in the 3 years I have been in the industry is not doing it sooner. The people I have met, the great friendships formed, the places I have seen, the personal development, the challenges, victories and defeats, the adventures I've had and continue to have to make this the best time of my life. And it's only just begun!!!

The bug bit at 16 when I did a trial instructional flight for a Christmas present. Work experience at 17 years confirmed that choppers were definitely the way to go!

Big challenge and why?
First the financial aspect and secondly the mental approach to the theory exams.

First solo in the R22 and loads more since then, too many to mention!

What did you do when you finished?
I returned to South Africa and flew on a cattle station, hour building. I worked in the slaughterhouse to fill in the rest of the time. 100 hours allowed me to complete my SA CPL requirements then I progressed onto charter and vehicle recovery, B206 tourism and then offshore.

I work at Bristow Helicopters in Nigeria - flying offshore Sikorsky S76C+/++

Time will tell. 5 years is a very long time away in this game. Somewhere exotic with my family. I got a few ideas of how to get there. Short term is probably to tackle the JAA/Instructors/Fixed Wing. In fact a job back at Becker Helicopters would be sweet! Best Mike make me an offer I can't refuse ;-) Oh and of course, playing a lot more golf!

Advice to those learning to fly?
If you're contemplating training at Beckers, then go for it. Everything works in their favour and in turn it'll work in your favour too! Highly professional and they maintain a family feeling. Beckers is becoming one of the training powerhouses, worldwide! Full Stop!

Advice on looking for work?
Get stuck in, get dirty and make sacrifices. Surround yourself with people that support and motivate you every step of the way. You will reach your goal!

I started in July 2008 and finished on 31 January 2009

Why helicopters?
Well, looking for the right career has always been a challenge. I remember one day back in 2004 when I putting a roof on in Coffs Harbour new hospital (which is right next door to the old one) and the rescue helicopter was coming and going every now and then. It was coming in really low so I could see the pilot inside. I thought that was pretty cool. So as I was slugging it out putting the new roof on I decided to take a look into helicopters. Well after the initial shock of the costs I put some ideas and research behind me and I was able to start my training a few years later.

Biggest challenge in training and why?
Theory! Big thanks to Jimmy (James Orrom) and Robin (Robin Helsdon) for helping me through it.

Most memorable flight?
Going solo for the first time. I remember it so clearly because I was scared out of my mind. My instructor Mez took for me for a few circuits then told me I'd flown the last one without his help. So he instructed me to land and radio the tower. He got out and sent me off! What a rush!

What did you do when you finished training?
I was pretty lucky. The day after I passed my flight test there was a vacancy at the 12 Apostles Helicopters in Victoria. So I was straight on a plane and started there pretty much straight away.

What are you doing now?
Currently enjoying one of the world's finest inventions ... Beer! But I'll be starting up at Hamilton Island Air this weekend as a line pilot. Even a cricket bat couldn't wipe the smile from my face.

How many hours have you logged?
I have logged 525 hours with hopefully another 500 coming from my new job!

What are your ratings?
R22, R44, MD500. I have also done my HUET and I'm halfway through my sling training.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

Advice to those wanting to learn to fly?
Study hard, listen to your instructor, aim for accuracy in everything you do and always practice liftoffs, landings and hovering, even if you are just going out to do a nav. You're paying so make the most of every second in the aircraft.

Advice on looking for work?
1 Start calling people early, even if it's just to tell them you're finishing soon, then before you take the flight test, then when you pass, that way they know you're keen.

2 Be ready to do anything, anywhere, it's all about hours.

3 Always put passport photo on your CV so it stands out and deliver it by hand as much as possible.

4 Turn up wearing clothes that look like you work there already (if they wear white shirts and trousers turn up in a white shirt/polo and trousers).

5 Spend money wisely during training and do things that will make you stand out from other 105 hour pilots. (If you have the money do a R44 rating or if you did it in your course then maybe a sling course or bump up your hours on a 44).

Any final words?
You only get out of aviation what you put in. That starts in the classroom and with your instructor and continues throughout your career. Everyone I know that has done well has always done the hard yards to start with, like cleaning aircrafts for months watching others flying and just waiting their turn. They have worked hard for a little or no pay and have taken jobs anywhere, often getting the job on a Monday and moving to the other side of Australia and starting on the Tuesday.

Started at the end of 2004 but didn't finish until May 2005!

While training I got to my PPLH stage when Mike got a call about some co-pilot for some of us students! We were sent out to do locust spotting with Heli Aust out of Bankstown, NSW. I did about 3 months in total with them and it was by far the best thing that could have ever happen to a student pilot. Not only did we get a great opportunity to fly around in Jetrangers and Squirrels all day, we got a chance to see how it all worked in the real world! And not only that, I got to meet and work along side some of the big guns in the Australian Helicopter industry today! I took away memories and lessons from them guys that will live with me forever.

Why helicopters?
Well as a young bloke, I grew up near an Australian Army base. Almost every day had Army Tanks and APC's rolling up and down our street! And as cool as they were? They never really impressed me. But the Army did have one machine that could stop me in my tracks, no matter what I was doing! Every couple of days this machine had me running out the door to look at it! It was beautiful. Sweet sounds of the UH-1H Hueys!! You know even if it meant I was only going to see them for a split second, I just needed to see these awesome machine fly past! For years I use to look up and think "how cool is that!" Anyway to this very day a Huey flying my way will have me headed for the door to have a look! My time on the earth is not DONE until I get my arse in the PIC seat of one! (205, 212, 214 .... mmmm 214). When that's done, I'll die happy.

Biggest challenge whilst training
Well for those of you who know me know that I only ever went to school to eat my lunch! (Dumb Arse!) sssooo ... for me the theory was always gonna be the biggest challenge by far! The practical I knew I could do! It was only ever the theory I feared the most! But hey, I got through it and at the end of the day what I learned about myself and know now! I think it's truly amazing how when you really have a passion for something all the pieces will just fall into place. I even ended up with some pass marks that I still can't believe today? (between 90-98%)!

Sure I failed exams and felt like a loser, but life itself throws new challenges at us everyday. If you think about it isn't that what a helicopter pilot have to face? New challenges? Did I lie down and feel sorry? Did I cry? Not on your life! I went right back and hit the books! I was determined not to let CASA bullshit questions get the better of me and take my dream away.

Most memorable flight
Hand down has to be the day my heart jumped in my mouth when Mike Becker said to me "Now this time when you take off the helicopter will act quite differently as my skid (meaning his side) is going to come off the ground first as when you come up to the hover by yourself your skid will hang low and the chopper will blah, blah, blah ..... " Oooohhhhhhh! What did you just say?! By myself?! ... (Solo) ... SSSShhhhiiittt! I'm never ever gonna forget that day.

What did you do when you finished training?
Well getting my CPLH took a lot of money and then some! (same old story). So before I could even think about chasing the dream I had to go back to my old job in the building game for a while to get some more money behind me. Within a few weeks I returned to Beckers to do my R44 endorsement (a must have if you're serious about a flying job today). A few weeks later I was chasing down some job leads Beckers had for me!

What are you doing now?
I work for a great bunch of blokes and I fly full time for a company called County Helicopters in Victoria, Australia. We are an "Airwork" company. Our primary role is all things to do with weed control and agriculture spraying of crops and pastures etc. We also do a lot of sling and film work! We have two parts to the company, with one half of the base in South Australia and the main base in Ballarat, Victoria. We also have a Grade 1 instructor on board that really has a passion for all things to do with Ag. In 2009 we also become an Ag pilot training school.

We also own Heli Vista which is our Charter company (joyflights etc) which at this moment is based full time in South Australia in the Flinders Ranges. Which by the way, the Flinders Ranges is a really beautiful part of Australia's history. I reckon everyone must see it at some point of their lives. I quite often go there to take over from the junior pilot (low hours) as we do get film work out over Lake Eyre or get the odd shooting contract. Which is something the Boss (or any Boss for that matter) will NOT let any of our low hour pilots near.

I also fly part time for Barossa Helicopters (yes, it's the Chopper Chix) based in the Barossa Valley in South Australia. But I only do this when no-one I know is watching me ... hehehe.. No really, when the old fella gets snowed under I'm more than happy to lend a hand.

How many hours have you logged?
1500 hours flying full time for about the past two years (3 years of ground work).

What are your ratings?
Mmmmm, off the top of my head - Agriculture Grade 2 (soon to be Grade 1), sling and the boss has me doing my NVFR as we speak.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
No idea really! But for right now I owe the boys who gave me a start in the industry a little more of my time. I am really happy in doing what I am doing right now. I enjoy the type of flying we do. I enjoy learning new things and seeing new places each week. Most of all I enjoy how Ag flying not only teaches you about wind and wires and things. You really learn about the helicopter's performance and what a difference the DA can make to your MTOW every hour of every day! Or for that matter what a difference clean blades can make when you wash the bloody helicopter. But I'd love some day to find a job closer to my family in Brisbane so I can see them more often.

Advice to those learning to fly?
Easy, if it's something you want to do and you have bucket loads of cash then do it! I'm 100% proof that you don't have to have the sharpest tool in the shed to become a helicopter pilot. You just need a passion and a good training school with instructors that know what they're talking about. So if you have a strong work ethic and are prepared for the long haul your dreams can come true.

Make no mistake, make sure it's something you really want to do because at the end of the day it can cost you everything, and I'm not just talking money (house, car, wife). All the stories you hear about how good we have it, half of them are bull and the other half are shit. That's a fact. Fame and fortune is never gonna happen. Hot women don't give a rats you can fly a helicopter. They only want to know who owns the bloody thing!

Forget everything you hear about how much money helicopter pilots earn. In your first 2-3 years you will be lucky if you earn $20k - $30k per year and for all your hard work on the ground you will get very few flight hours in return. For those of you that can see the bigger picture, after 1-2 years on the ground thing will improve. Money, life and respect in the industry gets better with the average wage somewhere around $40k - $60k per year. And that's for a man with a long list of ratings.

Advice on looking for work
Well in this game timing is everything. Things can change at a drop of a hat and by the time the afternoon comes around we might be looking for 1 or 2 new workers (junior pilots). So my advice is ... if you have a place your keen on, show your face! Every couple of days! Get to know the boys and girls and find out what it is they do. Be proactive and help out a little. Expect nothing. If you're around and a position is available - bonus! This could take awhile, may be months but you just never know!

I'll tell ya what we look for a in a new guy or girl. Someone who is keen to look, listen and learn. Be seen but not always heard (I can't stand people who speak shit all the time). We look for someone who can wash a car or a helicopter or sweep the hanger floor without being asked. Someone who won't piss and moan at the thought of working most weekends. Someone willing to put in the hard yards to get somewhere in life. See the bigger picture. Most of all we look for people who can trust and only have to ask them to do it once! It had to be done right, the first time, every time!

Final words
Well as I'm sure Mike will tell you, your new CPLH is only a licence to learn. That is true.

You gotta make a 5 year plan! Plan to start at the bottom and work your way up. It's a long hard road but believe me it's well and truly worth it.

Know your place on the food chain. Understand you're at the very bottom. So what! You've got a CPLH. Who cares! Go out there and soak up everything there is to know about flying!

Try and do as much time in the R44. Most companies today own R44's but they can't really get insurance for you until you've done around 50 hours? So the more R44 hours you can come away from the school the better chance of getting the first job. I'm not saying do 50 hours (if you can afford to then all the better), but if you come away with 10 or 15 hours then it's a lot better than 3 - 5 hours that the other guy's got.

Don't waste your time and money on sling or night ratings. Seriously, you won't be doing that type of work until you've done at least 500 hours plus.

Passing the theory exams. Why? It's just that I am not a very theoretical person. But this does not mean that it's not important. Whatever I have learned has come handy to me til now and I am so sure it will come handy in the future also.

So much more exciting and challenging than our fixed wing friends. The world's more interesting below the transition layer!

Whilst training at Beckers what was your biggest challenge?
Probably sling training. My goodness that was a workout! It was like learning to hover all over again, but it was of the funniest things I've done.

Most memorable flight?
First solo. We cruised around for 20 minutes or so doing autos and then we did a circuit where Deano proceeded to tell me what to do upon engine failure at every (and I mean every) point in the circuit. I knew something was up. Sure enough I went up to the best 3 circuits I've ever done to this day.

What did you do when you finished your training?
Road trip followed by some work chasing cows on horseback before getting offered an engineering apprenticeship from Mike and Jan.

What are you doing now?
Right now I'm looking after two young kids who are trying their best to turn my hair grey! But my job is with CHC flying Super Pumas 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. It allows me the privilege of changing nappies so much.

How many hours have you logged?
1800 total time.

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
Finished with the nappy changing! Probably doing much the same as I am currently, still flying out to the rigs. If I could get a very profitable business of the ground then maybe I could fly less and less. I know it may be hard to imagine right now but there is so much more to life than helicopters. I wouldn't have believed you if you had told me that 8 years ago though! I would love to own a A109 Grande one day and take the family around OZ and beyond. Maybe that can be my 10 year goal!

Advice to those wanting to learn to fly?
Enjoy your training and suck every bit of info out of your instructors as you can. Quiz them on their past flying lives and get a working prospective on the industry and how things happen in the real world. You never stop learning. Don't see Theory as a necessary evil, it all plays a part a part in your career and you will use it all again. Also do your ATPL subjects straight after your CPL exams even if you don't think you'll ever need them, they're not scary.

Advice on looking for work?
Just the usual stuff. Good attitude, always fly and carry yourself like a future employer or CASA is watching you. You never know, they just might be! I've been offered a job and missed out on a job because of it. Be prepared that it won't be easy finding a job but remember this is what you've always wanted to do. It will happen if you want it bad enough. Don't listen to negative people or opinions.

Why helicopters?
Find planes too boring. Also, grew up watching my father fly helicopters in the India Army and the sight of helicopter floating down majestically during auto rotations and flaring painted a permanent picture in my mind. I had to experience the same and it definitely beat all of my imagination.

Whilst training at Beckers what was your biggest challenge?
Clearing the meteorology exam. I just could not get my head around DSLR & SLR & ELR. Still can't.

Most memorable flight at Beckers?
The nav sortie that I flew with Dave (David Paech) AKA Snake. During the flight I thought we had flown into restricted airspace, had a big argument with Dave mid-air, but we were alright.

What did you do when you finished your training?
Was tied up to the wired fence on airside and my hair was painted green! Well that and had a holiday across Australia with my wife and son.

What are you doing now?
Flying a Bell 407 for ARKI Aviation in Pune, India.

How many hours have you logged?
800+

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
Moving on to a twin maybe.

Advice to those wanting to learn to fly?
Enjoy every moment of it. It's the most fun time ever. Remember every flight is a new beginning, don't waste it.

Final words?
Being at Becker Helicopter's was one of the most memorable time in my life. I am more than glad I elected to train with Beckers. It's been 3 years since, but I can remember and use all the valuable lesson, it does work in when you are up there flying single pilot in the most trying conditions. Thanks a lot again guys, it was a real pleasure.

A Chinese coal carrier in the Great Barrier Reef was off course and in a restricted zone, 15 nautical miles outside the shipping lane, when it ran aground. The 230 bulk coal carrier Sheng Neng 1 ran aground on the reef about 70km east of Great Keppel Island on 3 April 2010.

The vessel, which was carrying about 65,000 tonnes of coal from Gladstone, had 950 tonnes of oil on board. The vessel had hit the reef at full speed.

Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh said, specialised crews could take "several weeks" to salvage the ship once it was able to be moved.

Since the incident, Fergus Ponder (Head of Civilian School) has been flying with the team from Maritime Safety Queensland in the Agusta 109E. Fergus is still flying there.

After making his first contact with Becker Helicopters back in August 2008 it took 27 year old Ty Canfield just a few months to prepare himself for the biggest challenge of his life.

Ty, from Capalaba, began his CPLH training at Beckers on 12 January 2009. The biggest challenge for him was the arduous theory exams but with guidance from his theory instructor, James Orrom and his determination to study a minimum of 3 hours a night he successfully passed his 7 subjects.

Flying was much more fun, still a lot of hard work but it was better than theory. Looking back Ty says his biggest achievement was his first solo flight followed closely by the words from his CPLH testing officer and Chief Pilot, Mike Becker “Congratulations Ty, you’ve passed mate!”

Since gaining his licence in June 2009 Ty did what most other newbies to the commercial world of helicopters did and contacted all the operators. Whilst visiting ABC Heli, Coolangatta Airport, Ty offered his services for free, working unpaid 2 days a week. Yes, it included sweeping the hanger floors! In mid July 2009 Ty was offered a paid position for 2 days a week. He was happy to do this. His commitment to the company proved fruitful and a full time pilot position was offered to him 2 months later.

Ty is now the Base Manager at ABC Heli, working 5 days a week out of Tangalooma. Another pilot works with him 2 days a week. Since January 2009 Ty has logged a total of 300 hours.

What does he like about ABC Heli? The great people and the view from the office (Tangalooma from 1000 feet) is spectacular. He is living his dream.

Why fly?
I’ve always been interested in aviation. The first thing I ever remember wanting to do was be a Commercial Airline Pilot but shelved that idea after getting airsick in 4 out of 5 light aircraft flights. My interest in helicopters started with a joy flight at SeaWorld as a young teenager. I just loved the versatility of helicopters and the way they flew. I’ve also never been airsick in a helicopter. Around 8 more joy flights over the years cemented a love of helicopters. It just took me a long time to finally decide to do my licence (with a push from my wife).

Why train at Beckers?
I looked into all the helicopter training schools in south-east Queensland and visited a couple of them before deciding to train with Beckers. I knew I wanted to train in a Robinson helicopter as that was the type I would most likely end up flying initially. Beckers also do some other operations that may give you the opportunity to ride along in other helicopter types or gain experience as ground crew for sling load or joyflight operations. Other factors for me were having in house theory and on-site maintenance. The biggest deciding factor though was the friendly atmosphere. You’re really made to feel welcome and like part of the Beckers family – even when just visiting.

What licence?
105hr CPL(H) with 85hrs R22 and 20hrs R44.

Thoughts on theory?
I’ve found in-house classroom theory to be the way to go. Some schools use external theory providers for self-study or classroom theory. Beckers in-house classroom theory is fantastic. The theory manuals are great and the theory instructor is fantastic with excellent tips, explanations and the patience of a saint. Doing the theory in-house also means the opportunity to go out to the hanger to look at the aircraft and also talk to the engineers and help with maintenance, which all helps with understanding.

Biggest challenge in theory?
The biggest challenge in theory for me was staying focused and motivated through Air Law, as it is probably the driest subject of the lot. It is also a very intensive subject with long revision tests for homework. I found through all the subjects that there is plenty of help available in class and if you put in the work it will usually pay off in the results. The break between theory blocks also helps as it gives a chance to do some more flying training and remember why you’re doing this in the first place.

Tips on theory?
The more pre-reading you can do prior to coming to theory class, the better. Reading all the theory manuals at least once before coming to class gave me some level of knowledge to build on right from the start. Even doing things like practicing reading aviation weather forecasts and listening to aviation radio calls on a scanner can be a big help when it comes time to do those things yourself.

Thoughts on Flight Ops?
The flying training is fantastic. After all, the flying is the reason we want to train in the first place. Flying a helicopter is challenging, rewarding, fun and exciting. After loving helicopters for so long, when you first go solo and the realisation hits that “hey, I can actually fly a helicopter!” it’s a fantastic feeling. The first few weeks of flying are really intensive. You come back after a flight of around an hour feeling totally drained. Later on you come back from a flight of closer to 2 hours itching to go back up for more.

Biggest challenge in Flight Ops?
The early stages of flight training I think were the most challenging. Firstly learning to hover, then picking the aircraft up and putting it back on the ground gently, then flying decent circuits. Once all that starts to come together and you can start to put the helicopter where you want it to be it’s pretty cool.

Most memorable flight?
My most memorable moment in flight training (apart from first solo – woo hoo!) was a big navigation flight to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Archerfield and back to Maroochydore inland through the Glass House Mountains. Fantastic scenery heading south along the coast, with the best part being flying a helicopter myself down past SeaWorld and the Gold Coast beaches where my interest in choppers first began. Fantastic feeling being the pilot in the area where I had already been on about 4 scenic flights as a passenger.

Added by the Writer of this Blog 21/10/09: Another memorable moment? On the day of Geoff's CPLH Certificate Ceremony he later flew his grandparents, his Mum & Dad and his gorgeous wife Kylie on a scenic flight of the Coast.

What are you planning to do after Beckers?
After I finish my training I plan on packing my car and heading off to visit some tourism and charter operators in the hopes of picking up some work on the ground doing admin, loading passengers, refuelling etc. before eventually moving up to flying.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
In 5 years time I hope to be established with a company doing a variety of scenic and charter work with maybe a bit of aerial work (photography, film) as well in a turbine helicopter.

Final advice?
My final advice for anyone that has a love of helicopters and would like to fly them is really just to do it. Be realistic though about the time, effort and money involved in training for a CPL and the fact that it will take time to get established in the industry. Be prepared to work hard and treat training like a job and career goal. For me, too many things lined up to not chase my dream. I had fantastic support and ultimately didn’t want to live my life wondering.

We congratulate Robin who gained his Instructors Rating earlier this month. Robin trained at Beckers, then became our Theory Instructor and has fulfilled his dream to become a Flight Instructor.

On test day, CASA's Testing Officer, Chris Townsend instructed Robin to give a board brief on Confined Areas before requesting Robin to teach him Elementary Handling in flight. During this flight Robin had to demonstrate Autorotations, Jammed Pedals, Low Fly whilst answering questions on Emergencies. Well done Robin!

Who would have thought that a boy from the bush who dreamed of flying the helicopter that was mustering above him, would one day be running a Civilian flight school on the Sunshine Coast training students from all over the world to fly. Using his background of mustering, long lining and fire fighting, Fergus Ponder is value adding to the resources available to his students.

As a kid, Fergus Ponder grew up on a 40 000 acre sheep station in Northwestern NSW. His first job out of school was with Stanbroke Pastoral Company in 1986. He continued to work with them as a Jackaroo, stockman and then Head stockman until 1996 with brief stints away droving and helping out on the family station.

In 1996, the dream was to become a reality and to the shock of his wife Lee, he decided to become a helicopter pilot. Mike and Jan Becker had just started Noosa Helicopters, a flight school and Fergus was their second student to train. He took to it like a duck to water and found that helicopters were a whole lot easier to start than a colt on a cold morning.

His first job was with Webb Helicopters at Emerald QLD and it would be remiss to not mention his first official task as a newly graduated rookie pilot was to clean the loo! He soon worked his way in to mustering in an R22 around Central and Southwest Queensland, based at Windorah and venturing as far out as the Gammon Range in South Australia.

Fergus went back to Becker Helicopters in 1998, this time as a Flight Instructor. Mike and Jan were training students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Although flying was a comfortable place, standing in front of a class full of eager students was a bit of a stretch for Fergus. However he gained in experience and knowledge and started yearning for bigger and brighter horizons.

The Coleambally Irrigation Area in NSW was a long way from the Sunshine Coast, but a year of spraying rice and soy beans with MAS Agwork was a new challenge, however vertical reference long line was a goal that was not easily attained in Australia. As luck would have it and due to a 1 in 5 million chance, Fergus and his wife won a Green card through the American Diversity Lottery.

March 2000 saw a very different horizon – Southeast Alaska had much WOW factor at first glance, mountains that rise from the sea, virtually straight up and with big timber easily topping out around 200 feet tall. This was a place where long lining was commonplace. Temsco Helicopters gave Fergus his break in Turbine Helicopters and vertical reference, giving support to the Forestry Service all around the mountains and glaciers of Alaska. We won’t mention the days of Salmon fishing or riding a push bike trying to out run a black bear on the way home from work.

Fergus and Lee went to Texas for the winter of 2000 flying traffic watch in the Dallas metroplex in a Bell 206 Jetranger. The Australian accent was a bit of a hindrance over the airwaves and at one point he was stuck between two DFW runways hovering while the tower worked out what direction he was wanting to go. He soon learnt to talk ‘Texan” and radio speak was much easier.

The next summer - 2001 found them back in Alaska with Fergus honing his skill with the long line as he helped support a crew of 40 staff and 200 dogs on a glacier 6000 ft above Skagway. He also flew tourists over the glaciers, fjords and mountains SE of Alaska. You can’t beat an Aussie from the bush telling tourists about Glaciers in Alaska – watch out for the drop bears on the glacier!

The next two years Fergus flew Emergency services in Texas and Alaska in Twin Squirrels, BK117’s, Bell 212 and Bell 407’s. Long line took back seat to the birth of his two boys, Jackson and Lachlan.

Midwest Helicopters in Chicago took Fergus under their wing in 2003 where he started at ground level and worked his way up to Chief Pilot as the lead long line pilot flying an S58T all over the continental USA. MWH is mainly a construction support and fire fighting company, flying 100 – 300 ft lines bringing aerial support to high rise in the cities, to power line tower construction over the Mississippi and concrete pouring for cell towers in the Rockies.

In 2005, he was booked for ‘parking’ the helicopter in a no parking zone in down town Chicago, while they refueled the S58T during a high rise job. To his defense, it was a hot refuel and he still says he was not parked at the time, as the engines were still running.

Fergus flew the Army Core of Engineers and other military and civilian contractors around New Orleans during the relief effort after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The fire seasons were long, starting as early as Easter and at times not finishing until November or December.

So our blast in the USA came to an end in 2008, after many adventures it was time to come home. Now the Head of Becker Helicopter Civil Flight school – managing a fleet of R22, R44, AS 350, Agusta 119 Koala and Agusta 109 E Power. Fergus will use his wide base of experience to bring a little something extra to the civilian flight school.

“We are running regular long lining courses here” Fergus says, “we do 10 hours of flight training and that includes everything from belly hooking right up to either a 100’ or 150’ line depending on the student. It’s a great challenge and when you get the knack, it is an extremely satisfying skill.”

Sunshine Coast organisations key to delivering one of the largest commercial aviation contracts in Australian history

Sunshine Coast organisations are key to delivering one of the largest commercial aviation training contracts in Australia’s history.
Following an announcement earlier this year that Specialist Training Australia (STA), a subsidiary of Coffey International Limited, had signed agreements to provide aviation training worth in excess of $100 million to a Middle Eastern client, STA has now confirmed the client is the Saudi Arabian National Guard.
Roger Olds, managing director of Coffey International Limited, said: “We invested in the Gulf States’ market four years ago and it is wonderful to be able to deliver this training in Australia, with the support of local service providers. We had to compete against international competition that had previous relationships, but we won this on the quality of our team and a desire for the client to develop Australian relationships.”

Local small business Becker Helicopter Services, with support from KBR, will provide basic pilot training for over 100 helicopter pilots, and the University of the Sunshine Coast will provide English language training, as part of a contract for STA.

STA Program Manager Gavin Lawrence said that it was in no small part a testimony to the vision of Mike and Jan Becker, owners of Becker Helicopter Services, that STA was about to launch into the delivery of the training.

“Mike and Jan have truly helped to place the Sunshine Coast on the international map for helicopter training.”

Appreciation for help in winning and delivering the contract is also extended to a number of other people and organisations:

• The Mayor and Councillors of Sunshine Coast Regional Council
• Julie Swain, Principal Regional Development Officer, Department of Tourism, Regional Development & Industry
• KBR
• University of the Sunshine Coast.

Gavin also said that the students would be living, working and spending in the local community.

“The flow-on effects to the local community are immeasurable. I trust that the people of the Sunshine Coast will embrace this opportunity and take the chance to share this fantastic area with the National Guardsmen and their families.”
In addition to the 100 pilots being trained at the Sunshine Coast, some 200 plus aircraft maintainers will be trained under contract at Queensland Government facilities in Brisbane.

In total, the aviation training is worth in excess of $100 million over five years, much of which will flow directly into the Queensland economy. The contract was won against international competition and is thought to be the largest contract of its type won by an Australian company.

The first students will commence training on the Sunshine Coast this week.

Why did you want fly Helicopters?
It is something that's part of a big wish. I eventually want to conduct voluntarily work once I have made a living. What better can you do than being helicopter which you can use for dropping, evacuation, rescue in general or anything similar you name it.

Why did you choose Beckers?
I initially chose the country. It has to be stable weather rather than Europe where the weather is, especially around the Northsea, very unstable. Second I chose dozens of flightschool around Australia and chose Beckers because of their straightforwardness and honesty. They do not promise you mountains of gold but the tell you that with hard work AND the right attitude you can have a wonderful time..

When did you start here?
November 2007

What was theory like?
I didn't sit class. As of my previous experience because of my aeronautical degree almost 75% was clear for me. So, besides my flying, I studied hard at home for 7 weeks and did the 7 exams which I passed well.

During the week how many hours you study for cyber exams?
I usually did 8 hrs a day during previous mentioned 7 wks and during my 2-3 hours break I did initial training.

Was it enough?
Yes it was, I passed all exams. Ok, not with 98% but I passed them nicely :)

What was your "first" flight experience with Beckers and who did you fly with?
I flew with Mez for the first time. My first flight was amazing and the best , but also the most difficult, I have ever done. Helicopter flying is difficult in the beginning but after 10 hrs you get the feeling and can start enjoying it.

Best flying experience?
First solo NAV. I flew through the amazing mountains ranges where the tops were towering above layers of fog which covered the valleys. On the way way back via de coast spotted some dolphins, very nice and unforgettable.

Not so nice flying experience?
The day I decided to "just" swap over from the R22 to the R44 helicopter when I had to do my dummy CPL test. Lot of stress and all my skills were gone all the sudden because of the stress.
Luckily after 1 hour Mike got me back on track and three days later I passed my CPL :)

What was your flight test like?
The actual flighttest was "relatively" easy as Mike prepares you through and through already on the dummy test. On the dummy test you work very hard: You do emergencies , diversions in nav flights, engine failures ,questions to put pressure upon you, faking sick passenger in the back of the R44. But..... after you have experienced all this and he sees you do well he just does the things he needs to do on the actual flighttest and that is it.
And amazingly even on your flighttest he teaches you so many small tricks to improve your airmanship.

Where and what are you going to do now?
I hope that a job comes off around the Great Ocean Road. Otherwise I return to Europe and concentrate on my previous job in aeronautical engineering to set out a course to become helicopter pilot and gaining hours. So if anyone knows a nice spot: I speak 6 languages and know how to fly helicopters and I am not lazy to get my hand dirty......

Advice to new students?
In Australia the helicopter business is one in which you have to do 3-5 years of hard work until you've gained 1500-2000hrs. After that you career gets a lot better. Do not hesistate and follow your intuition. If you want something go for it and you will succeed.

I am taking summer course about “Helicopter dynamics” and during class, phenomena related to helicopter flight is too difficult to visualize in mind, so I end up with no learning during class.
This article with clear illustrations made me a bit easy with helicopter dynamics. This article was very much interesting and written in such an attractive manner that I read it whole in one time, which I usually don’t.

At all times the pilot is at the mercy of the elements that we call the weather. It is with sound knowledge of the science of meteorology that we are in a position to make decisions as a pilot to safely operate our aircraft within this mass we call the atmosphere.

Definition of forecast: The ability to predict, or to calculate the weather beforehand, so that the person reading the forecast can make provision or allowance for. This does not mean it will happen, as we cannot see 100% into the future. In aviation weather forecasting the probability of the forecast happening is only 50% or greater.
